BOOK PROMOTION: ANZABEGOVO - The Early and Middle Neolithic Settlement in Macedonia

The City house hall of the Municipality of Štip, on November 05. 2010, hosted the promotion of the most expected monograph edition: “Anzabegovo, the Early and Middle Neolithic settlement in Macedonia”, edited by Voislav Sanev, field director and technical organizer of the excavations at Anzabegovo and one of the authors of chapters.

The book presents the results of the systematic excavations of the Neolithic settlement Barutnica, near the village of Anzabegovo (Amzabegovo), that were carried out during the summers of 1969 and 1970. The excavations in Anzabegovo were international Yugoslav-American scientific project, and are known to be the largest research project at any prehistoric, Neolithic site. This book presents the results of the Macedonian-Yugoslav team in the project. It complements and revises the conclusions of the American team, which were published in "Neolithic Macedonia", a book edited by the co-director of the project Maria Gimbutas, in 1976.

In five chapters and 260 pages, the authors of “Anzabegovo”, Voislav Sanev, Milutin Garašanin and Draga Garašanin, define and interpret precisely the stratigraphy of the settlement and its cultural horizons, than the typology and chronology of the ceramics, the houses, and finally - the burial customs and cults of the inhabitants of Anzabegovo in the Neolithic.

All chapters include rich technical documentation illustrating the finds and the trenches. There are a total of 15 color photos and 192 in black and white, organized separately and in 18 plates with 115 photos. Then, there are 39 plates with 316 drawings of the ceramic materials and 11 more drawings of the graves and the non-movable objects. In addition to the book is a folder with plans of the trenches and scarps, printed in color.

In the City hall of the Municipality of Štip, to more than 100 archaeologists and interested visitors, the book was promoted by Dragi Mitrevski, professor at the Dept. For Art History and Archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje, and Pasko Kuzman, Director of the Cultural Heritage protection Office in Skopje.
